Banksy is an artist/designer who uses remixing techniques to evoke an emotional and social response. I have chosen his piece of the Queens’ Guard urinating on a wall. I really like the humor used in this piece as the guard appears unfazed by his unexpected behavior. This piece explores the social expectations of the Queens Guard as the public see them as noble soldiers but in this piece they are presented as the complete opposite and display actions of hooligans. Banksy is renowned for his controversial pieces and this has boosted his reputation into success. He knew that in order to get his point across his image needed to be almost disturbing in a way. The controversial image quickly gathered publicity and achieved a very strong reaction from it viewers.

An important ideology that is informing design in today’s market is that of sustainability. The idea is being expressed through global warming and climate change. Governments and also high profile companies all over the world are promoting this idea to protect future generations. Suddenly there is a huge market for environmentally safe products. Not only have designers started making energy efficient products but they have also started to design products that can produce energy for your home in a environmentally friendly way, a perfect example would be the solar panel which harnesses free energy from the sun to power your home. The idea that our world is being infected from the harmful chemicals being released has prompted the consumer to buy these products.
People are willing to buy these products to save money and the environment at the same time.

I believe design is typically about creating and inventing while utilising contemporary materials and technologies. Science on the other hand is more about researching and discovering these contemporary materials and technologies. To say design has become a science is unfair; design has just evolved to encompass scientific methods to develop these materials and technologies. With the combination of design and science, design has multiplied into specific sub-categories, which benefit science and design separately but also aid current issues in today’s society. To conclude I believe that if design develops to encompass more than just science it will flourish beyond what we see today.

The idea of a symbolic universe relates to the concept of a Utopia. A Utopia is an ideal universe or society that we create in our minds to almost eliminate the unidentified and legitimize our fantasies in doing so. They give people security and remove the vulnerability that people experience in reality.
A perfect example of a Utopia today would be social networking sites. Social networking sites give people the ability to become whatever person they want to be. Sites such as Facebook allow the user to create an alternate reality of oneself. A grown man can become a 16 year old girl, create a name and date of birth or an entire history and add photos. They almost start to live though their utopian vision talking to people and starting relationships with whom they choose.
